Re: Bamberg County Honors Legacy of Public Servant with Dedication of William H. Nimmons, Sr. Road
OLAR, S.C. — Bamberg County officials, community leaders, and residents gathered last Friday for the official dedication of William H. Nimmons, Sr. Road, celebrating a remarkable legacy of service that has shaped the community for generations. The ceremony was held at 12021 Carolina Highway in Olar and served as a powerful tribute to Mr. Nimmons’ 33 years of public service and unwavering commitment to Bamberg County.
The program brought together a distinguished group of speakers who reflected on Mr. Nimmons’ enduring impact. Wilma Edmonds, Mayor of the Town of Govan, presented the Key to the Town of Govan in honor of Mr. Nimmons, recognizing his lifelong dedication to public service and community advancement.
A moving historical reflection was delivered by the former Mayor of the City of Bamberg, who highlighted Mr. Nimmons’ role in the early formation of Bamberg County’s administrative government structure. The remarks detailed the historic 1976 county council elections and the challenges faced in securing equitable representation, including engagement with the U.S. Department of Justice, which ultimately led to approval of the October 18, 1976, election—an important milestone in the county’s governance.
The ceremony also honored the deep roots of the Nimmons family in Bamberg County, tracing back generations. From the legacy of his great-grandfather, Isaac Nimmons, who was born into slavery on Sims plantation, which is still located today between Midway and Bamberg. Isaac Nimmons was freed and given responsibility for starting a black community and overseeing 24 freemen and women. When Isaac Nimmons died in 1900, he was a landowner and left many acres and several thousand dollars to his children. A community builder, the Nimmons name has been woven into the fabric of the family’s longstanding commitment to education. Mr. William H. Nimmons himself carried that legacy forward through a life dedicated to education and leadership, serving as a teacher, principal, and educational administrator.
Throughout his career, Mr. Nimmons championed initiatives that improved the quality of life for residents across Bamberg County. His leadership helped establish vital programs and infrastructure, including the Bamberg County Handy Ride transportation service, the Olar–Govan–Middle Place Regional Water System, workforce development initiatives, solid waste programs, and enhancements to public safety and community services. He also served more than three decades on the Lower Savannah Council of Governments Board, helping bring critical resources and opportunities to the region.
Remarks were also delivered on behalf of Congressman Jim Clyburn by his representative, who emphasized Mr. Nimmons’ personal and lasting impact. “When we talk about people like Mr. Nimmons, we’re not just talking about titles—we’re talking about presence, commitment, and a legacy that continues to inspire,” she shared, noting his dedication to uplifting others and investing in his community.
Bamberg County Councilman District 6 Evert Comer Jr., who addressed an enthusiastic crowd of family members, friends, and residents from Govan and across Bamberg County, reflected on the significance of the moment. “Today is a celebration of a life well-lived in service to others. Mr. Nimmons’ work didn’t just impact policies—it impacted people. His legacy will continue to guide us as we move forward as a county united in purpose,” Comer said.
South Carolina House of Representatives, District 91 Lonnie Hosey also spoke during the program, highlighting the broader meaning of the dedication. “This moment reminds us that true public service is not about titles—it’s about impact. Mr. Nimmons set a standard of leadership that transcends politics and leaves a lasting imprint on future generations,” Hosey stated.
William H. Nimmons, Jr. delivered heartfelt remarks on behalf of the family, expressing gratitude to those in attendance and to the federal and state leaders who made the road dedication possible. He reflected on his father’s deep love for family and his unwavering belief in public service. “My father never forgot where he came from. He believed that serving with integrity would leave a lasting mark—and today, we see that legacy living on,” he shared.
The legislation to name the roadway in honor of Mr. Nimmons was sponsored by South Carolina House of Representatives District 90 Justin Bamberg, further underscoring the widespread support for recognizing his contributions.
The dedication of William H. Nimmons, Sr. Road stands as a powerful testament to a life devoted not to recognition but to meaningful service. A reminder that true leadership leaves a legacy that extends far beyond any single role—impacting generations and strengthening communities across political lines. As attendees gathered beneath the newly unveiled road sign, the message was clear: William H. Nimmons, Sr.’s legacy will continue to guide Bamberg County for years to come.
