Re:      Bamberg County Council Adopts Resolution to Honor Mrs. Lena R. Ford Sherman’s 101st Birthday

Bamberg, South Carolina (March 2026) –During the March 10 meeting, Bamberg County Council presented a resolution to commemorate Mrs. Lena R. Ford Sherman's 101st birthday, which was on January 1, 2026. District 3 Councilman Larry Haynes sponsored the resolution to honor Mrs. Sherman for her lifetime of faith, family devotion, and service to her community.

Mrs. Sherman was born on January 1, 1925, to the late Janie and Kisler Raysor on their farm in Bamberg, South Carolina. She was the only daughter of four children, raised with strong values rooted in hard work, family, and faith, and she attended public school in the Clear Pond Community. Lena married the late James Herman Ford, and together they raised twelve children: seven daughters and five sons. After Mr. Ford’s passing, she married Deacon George Sherman, welcoming an additional seven children into their beautifully blended family.

Today, Mrs. Ford is the proud grandmother of thirty-eight (38) grandchildren, forty (40) great-grandchildren, and forty-two great-great-grandchildren, representing a living legacy that spans generations and reflects the strength of her roots and the depth of her love. Mrs. Ford’s life has been marked by selfless service to her family, church, and community. Her personal joys include reading her Bible, word searches, fishing, and driving.

As a devoted member of Union Baptist Church in Bamberg, SC, and under the leadership of Pastor B.J. Donaldson, Mother Sherman continues to serve as a source of wisdom, encouragement, and spiritual strength to her church family and the wider community. Her children, family members, caregivers, friends, and fellow church members honor her not only for her remarkable longevity but for the extraordinary love, honesty, and guidance she has bestowed upon every life she has touched.

Councilman Haynes and the entire Bamberg County Council extend their “deepest gratitude, admiration, and best wishes to Mrs. Sherman and her family” and enthusiastically “celebrate her extraordinary life and enduring legacy.
