Re: Bamberg County Statement Regarding Detention Center Officer Arrest
Bamberg, South Carolina (August 2026) — Bamberg County confirms that a Bamberg County Detention Center officer was arrested Monday morning at approximately 9:00 a.m. and charged with Assault and Battery in the Third Degree involving an inmate.
Effective Monday, August 10, 2026, Officer Leroy Strother Jr. was relieved of duty. Bamberg County is fully cooperating with the appropriate law enforcement authorities as they conduct their investigation.
“The safety and security of those entrusted to our care is a responsibility we take very seriously,” said Captain Moses Cheatham, Director of the Bamberg County Detention Center. “Any allegation of misconduct is addressed promptly and through the appropriate process. Our officers are expected to uphold high professional standards, and we remain committed to maintaining the public’s confidence in the Bamberg County Detention Center.”
Because this is a pending criminal matter, Bamberg County will not comment on the specific circumstances of the case. The County remains committed to accountability, professionalism, and the safety of inmates, employees, and the public.
All individuals charged with a crime are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
